Hunt Staff & Expectations

Staff are those that are responsible for the hunting and training of hounds and those who have been appointed to help conduct each hunt. Staff is required to always maintain an active Colorado small-game hunting license.

Huntsman

Currently this role is simplified as this is a subscription hunt where Amy McCraken is the Huntsman. During the hunt, everyone is answerable to the Huntsman, regardless of position.

 Expectations of the Huntsman

  • Devotion and a sense of duty to the hounds with considerable time to spend to get to know them, train them, and care for them daily.

  • Devotion to the hunt including fixture upkeep and landowner relations on non-hunting days.

  • Maintenance of fit and well-trained hunters at their own expense if non-professional.

  • Above average skill as an equestrian and ability to cross country. A Huntsman’s proficiency should be such that it gives Directors no cause to worry about personal injury or property damage.

  • Prior exemplary conduct as a field member or staff with considerable knowledge of the hunt and country.

  • Loyalty and good rapport with the locals, landowners and Directors.

  • Appropriate firearm safety

  • Commitment to attendance.

Whippers-in

The Whips will be decided upon by the Huntsman and Directors. She will choose whom she feels she can mold and with whom she can work best. If there are several interested subscribers in an honorary position, then interviews, written and or mounted evaluation should be considered. An invitation to whip-in is renewed each season in writing from the Huntsman and may be revoked at any time the Huntsman or Directors see fit.

Field Masters will be chosen by the Directors. Several field members may be asked to serve as Field Master throughout the season. An invitation to lead the field is received from the Directors and may be revoked at any time the Huntsman or Directors see fit.
